- 1971-1975 I was born in Bay City, TX and started learning
everything I could about music. Just Kidding!!!
Isn't that what a musicians supposed to say?
- 1975-1982 Was interested in everything, but music. Mostly
sports and girls. That's not to say I didn't listen to
music. My dad played records every now and then
and seems like the radio was on in the truck as well.
Sometime during these years, I heard Willie Nelson's
"On The Road Again". It would take me about 14-15
years to appreciate country music. Our family relocated
to the thriving metropolis of Pinehurst, TX.
- 1982-1985 Started listening to a lot of Heavy Metal. Like I said,
14-15 years. I did, however, become a master
air/broom guitarist. I was the best one around
Houston, TX. I even gave some lessons. After air-
guitaring for awhile, I got my first guitar. A Cort from
the Sears mail order catalog. I promptly did a guitar
setup and started learning how to play it with strings
an inch off the neck!
- 1985-1989 Got my first and only flying V guitar. This time, a
Harmony from Sears. I let the technicians at Harmony
set it up and learned it was a hell of a lot easier to play! I
eventually learned how to tune it and learned some chords.
Not being satisfied enough with just strumming, I started
picking out some riffs and solos off my rock tapes. I finally
traded in the Harmony for an Ibanez. My first real guitar!!
- 1989-1994 I graduated high school and went off to college. While in
college I started woodshedding a lot more and eventually
got into my first band. We played a free concert every
Friday and Saturday afternoon. Nobody had to leave their
apartment or dorm because we would play loud enough
for everyone to hear! I also entered into 2 talent contests
my freshman and sophomore years. I didn't win either of
these, but learned it's hard to put on a show by yourself!
We did play one actual concert. A Monster's of Rock, if
you will, at the Seguin Auditorium in (you guessed it!)
Seguin, TX. We were one of 6 or 8 bands and put on a
hell of a show!!!
- 1994-2000 I graduated college and started working on my other career,
flying. Getting back to the music! I happened to be looking
through my dad's record collection one day and found a
Merle Haggard sings Jimmy Rodgers record. Decided to
listen and was flabbergasted at how good it really was. Like I
said, 14 - 15 years! After hearing this, I went and got an
acoustic guitar. For the next few years I played a lot at my
friend Jay's casa (house).
He taught me a lot of songs and
we would pick until the wee
hours of the morning.
Sometimes our other pickin'
friends Ed and Nick would drop by and I learned songs from
them as well.
- 2000-Present I decided that I had played to many concerts in my room that
no one got to listen to, so me and some friends decided to
form a country band. We named it Detour and played some
shows and had a good time. After we disbanded, I found out
about Borski's Tavern and the old time country jam on
Saturday afternoons. I owe a big
thank you to Gary Gibbs for
letting me sit in the first time I
went. I've learned so many things
from so many people since I've
been going there. Having acquired all this newly found
knowledge, I've started playing anytime I can. Currently, I
plunk around with the Honky-Tonk Healers when I can
and anyone else that will have me.
During this time, I also came across what I consider to be
one of the best players you'll ever hear, REDD VOLKAERT.
The first time I saw Redd play was at the
Astrodome in Houston, TX with Merle
Haggard. Since then, I've had the
opportunity to meet him and talk with
him about his music. I even talked him
into selling me a guitar that he had put
together himself!!! I was told that it was one of two that he
has put together. So I am the proud owner of a Redd
Volkaert custom guitar! But, my ultimate dream would be to
pick with him one night on stage.
Well, that's all for now, but certainly not all of it. I hope my playing will really take
off in the coming years. I'd like to say "Thank You" to anyone who's ever came out
and heard me play. Your support means A LOT to me! Hope to see you at a show
very soon.
